NFL fans, the 2019-20 season is officially over. After a crazy, controversial, and star-studded season, the Kansas City Chiefs are your Super Bowl LIV Champions.
Now that the offseason is officially here, it's the perfect time for fans to fantasize as to why their team could soon be crowned Super Bowl LV Champions, and the road to the Lombardi starts now. This year's free agency class could lead to major shakeups throughout the league, with multiple franchise quarterbacks looking to be on the move. However, this year's NFL Draft Class may just be equally as talented.
IT MEANS HISTORY PRESENTS: Our Inaugural NFL Mock Draft
*It's important to note that there will be NO TRADES made in this mock draft*
1st Overall Pick - Cincinnati Bengal select:
LSU QB Joe Burrow
In what seems like the most obvious pick of the draft, the Bengals get their quarterback of the future in Heisman winner Joe Burrow. At 6'4, 216 lbs, Burrow is the ideal size for an NFL signal-caller. Coming off a 463 yard, 5 touchdown National Championship performance, Burrow has the potential to have an instant impact on the young-QB-driven NFL.
2nd Overall Pick - Washington Redskins select:
Ohio State DE Chase Young
New HC Ron Rivera and Washington's abysmal defense gets significant help here by selecting the best prospect in this year's draft. Young has been touted as the best pass-rusher NFL scouts have seen in years, and would form a nice duo with fellow DE Montez Sweat. Watch out for Owner Dan Snyder to pull the first shocker of the draft, however, and possibly select Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa with this pick following rookie QB Dwayne Haskins disappointing first season. Speaking of Snyder, he could also be interested in trading back in the draft. Washington has no 2nd round pick this year due to the trade to acquire Sweat, and both the Dolphins and Chargers need quarterbacks. Lots of options at pick two, but getting the best player in the draft is the move for the capital city.
3rd Overall Pick - Detroit Lions select:
Ohio State CB Jeff Okudah
Depending on what Lions GM Bob Quinn wants to do, like Snyder, he could very well trade down to allow a QB-needy team like the Dolphins or the Chargers to select Tagovailoa. However, for the sake of this mock, Quinn and the Lions select Jeff Okudah out of OSU. Okudah, who has drawn comparisons to Arizona’s Patrick Peterson, has perfect size (6’1, 200 lbs.) to guard taller wide receivers and elite explosion necessary to guard NFL speedsters. The second Buckeye off the board in the first three picks, Okudah becomes an immediate difference-maker in Detroit's secondary, who are challenged with covering Packers WR Davante Adams and Vikings WRs Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen twice a year. Also, Detroit is currently shopping Pro Bowl CB Darius Slay, opening a CB1 slot in first-year DC Cory Undlin's defense.
4th Overall Pick - New York Giants select:
Alabama OL Jedrick Wills Jr.
Another team that could be looking to trade down in this year's draft is the New York Giants. Often criticized Giants GM Dave Gettleman is shopping the 4th overall pick and could trade the pick to a team looking to leapfrog the Miami Dolphins (5th overall pick) such as the Los Angeles Chargers or possibly even the Indianapolis Colts. If they do hold on to the pick, Bama’s Jedrick Wills makes a lot of sense. QB Daniel Jones showed a lot of potential in his rookie campaign, but the season was riddled by fumbles and losses. Wills will provide strong support in both the passing game, while also being a good run blocker for RB Saquon Barkley.
5th Overall Pick - Miami Dolphins select:
Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa
After a failed experiment with Josh Rosen and a bridge season from Ryan Fitzpatrick, the Dolphins end their quarterback carousel by drafting Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa. Tagovailoa is still recovering from November hip surgery that kept him out of consideration for the 1st overall pick. Tagovailoa has been called a left-handed Drew Brees by many: someone that‘s undersized under center but will destroy you with their mind. Tagovailoa’s medicals are looking very good; he should be able to be Miami’s week one starter amid a medical setback.
6th Overall Pick - Los Angeles Charger select:
Oregon QB Justin Herbert
The Philip Rivers Era is over in LA, and the organization brings in Oregon’s Justin Herbert to fill Rivers’ shoes. Coming into the season as the top QB prospect, Herbert had a disappointing senior season with the ducks, throwing for less than 3,500 yards and throwing for only 128 yards with an interception in Oregon’s Rose Bowl victory. However, he helped his draft stock tremendously by taking home MVP honors of the Senior Bowl earlier this month. Nonetheless, the Chargers get their hopeful quarterback of the future by selecting the third QB in the top 5 picks; HC Anthony Lynn has expressed confidence in QB Tyrod Taylor in Taylor bridging the gap between Rivers and his successor, look for Taylor to start Week 1.
7th Overall Pick - Carolina Panthers select:
Auburn DT Derrick Brown
The SEC Defensive Player of the Year joins a Carolina defense in need of a new identity. Following the sudden retirement of LB Luke Kuechly, a former DPOY, the Panthers get a needed boost to their D with Derrick Brown. Brown will be a fun toy for new Head Coach Matt Rhule to play with: Brown has an elite combination of size, strength, and athleticism, not to mention he played snaps at every position on the defensive line last year for the War Eagles.
8th Overall Pick - Arizona Cardinals select:
Oklahoma WR CeeDee Lamb
This pick just makes too much sense for Arizona. In need of help at the WR position, the Cardinals select the best WR in a loaded class of receivers, Oklahoma’s CeeDee Lamb. Lamb will be reunited with reigning Rookie of the Year in Cardinals QB Kyler Murray. Murray is the same quarterback Lamb caught 11 touchdowns and over 1,000 receiving yards from during his sophomore season as a Sooner. Lamb joins a receiver room with the experienced Larry Fitzgerald and youngster Christian Kirk, as Arizona looks to make some noise in the crowded NFC West.
9th Overall Pick - Jacksonville Jaguars select:
Clemson LB Isaiah Simmons
With the 9th pick, the Jaguars get the best player on the board with Clemson’s Isaiah Simmons. Simmons has freakish athleticism: at 6’4 225 lbs., he has the size and speed to be a Pro Bowl-caliber Outside Linebacker and could even play some snaps as a Defensive Back. Simmons finished his junior season at Clemson with over 100 tackles and 8 sacks and will form a terrorizing tandem with Jaguars OLB Myles Jack.
10th Overall Pick - Cleveland Browns select:
Iowa OL Tristan Wirfs
In what looked like a very exciting season, the Browns failed to reach expectations and finished 6-10. This was due in large part to QB Baker Mayfield’s disappointment of a sophomore season, which was in no way benefited by the play of Cleveland’s offensive line. To add insult to injury, LT Greg Robinson, who started 14 games last year for the Browns, was caught by US Border Patrol with 157 pounds of marijuana on him. Already with an OL need and now a zero percent chance of resigning Robinson, Cleveland is in search of help through the draft. They solve that problem through the Big 10 Offensive Lineman of the Year: Iowa’s Tristan Wirfs. New OL Coach Bob Callahan, Washington’s interim HC last season and successor to “Hard Knocks” legend Bob Wylie, gets a great new asset in Wirfs. Wirfs, 6’5 322 lbs., has a tremendous ability to move defenders land elongate the running game, perfect for Cleveland RB Nick Chubb, who finished last season 2nd in rushing yards. Look for Wirfs to play right guard or right tackle for the Browns.
